Everyone knows that New York has a ton of entertainment, from the chilling hills to the mysterious Lake George site that no one can explain. But there are other entertainments here as well. One of them was told by the publication Only in Your State.
New York is home to one of the rarest natural phenomena on the planet. A stunning event that takes place every year only in the summer.
Allegany State Park, which puts on a magical show for all visitors, is lit up by fireflies at certain times of summer.
From Georgia to southwest New York, fireflies gather in dark forests to mate. Although the time of year varies by state and area, New York City fireflies flock to Allegany State Park every year from late June to mid-July.
This special type of firefly, known as Photinus carolinus, has a distinctive glow pattern that creates a unique look every year.

Did you know that there are over 170 species of fireflies in the United States and that each one has its own unique glow.
The best way to admire this natural phenomenon is to watch a performance in a dark forest from 22:00 to 02:00.
Like many other species, male fireflies put on a stunning show trying to attract and mate with females. Depending on the temperature, males will take a break of ten to fifteen seconds between appearances, waiting for the females to respond.
You may have seen fireflies blinking in the backyard of your New York home before, but seeing the synchronized glow of fireflies in Allegany State Park is something out of the ordinary.
