Russian-speaking New Yorker used ChatGPT to negotiate with the landlord about the price of rent: the idea worked perfectly

New Yorker Svetlana used the ChatGPT artificial intelligence chatbot to write a scathing letter to her landlord, forcing him to fix the appliances in her house before agreeing to a rent increase. The edition told in more detail New York Post.

Svetlana, 28, said she was informed of a 0,4% rent increase just days after she applied for a reduction due to her washer and dryer not working for more than two years.

The extra fee would have increased her total monthly rent from $1389 to $1395.

“The rent increase alone didn’t bother me,” explained Svetlana, who declined to give her last name. “It was audacity to raise the rent, apparently in retaliation after I filed a complaint and demanded a rent reduction based on lower utilities.”

On the contrary, it turned out that her landlord attributed the rent spike to the fact that their previously broken elevator had been repaired.

Svetlana sent numerous unanswered emails to her landlord before eventually reaching out to ChatGPT, asking the bot to impersonate a housing lawyer.

She admitted that while it took several tries to get the perfect email with strong wording, including prompting the AI ​​system to add some more legal jargon, it ultimately worked in her favor. That same month, her washer and dryer were repaired.

“I never received an official response from my landlord,” she said. “There is still a sign in my building saying that the laundries are open again.”

ChatGPT even added a line to the email with a link to a specific section of the New York Rent Stabilization Code.

Svetlana, who works as an executive assistant, has already had some experience with AI software through her job, but is looking forward to applying the technology again in her personal life. For her next campaign, she intends to ask a bot to write a "scary legal letter" to her smoker neighbors who love to smoke indoors.

“Their smoke seeps into my apartment, and it becomes unbearable for me. I have decided not to do it yet,” she said.
