Job requirements
To receive SNAP benefits, residents must meet general work requirements, which include:
- registration for work;
- participation in the program SNAP Employment and Training (E&T) or Workfare if designated by the state SNAP agency;
- obtaining suitable work if offered;
- do not voluntarily quit your job or reduce your working hours below 30 hours per week without good reason.

“While SNAP assistance is designed to ensure that no one in our country goes hungry, its rules reflect the importance of work and responsibility,” the statement said. US Department of Agriculture.
Applicants are exempt from general job requirements if they meet one of the following criteria:
- Already work at least 30 hours per week (or are paid a wage equal to the federal minimum wage times 30 hours);
- Meet work requirements for another program (TANF or unemployment compensation);

- Unable to work due to physical or mental limitations;
- Regularly participate in a treatment program for alcohol or drug addiction;

The program has additional requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents, limiting three months of SNAP benefits over a three-year period to those who cannot demonstrate employment or training status. However, New York is currently operating under a federal agreement that for now waives the temporary limit requirement until February 28, 2025.
