As of now, masks are still required for everyone at the following locations, according to New York Governor Kathy Hokul's office:
- medical institutions regulated by the state;
- nursing homes;
- adult care facilities;
- correctional institutions;
- shelters for the homeless;
- shelters for victims of domestic violence;
- buses, planes, trains, subways and related stations;
- taxis and sharing services such as Uber and Lyft;
- the courts.
The state plans to analyze the number of cases in these specific locations. After that, he will decide whether to continue the rules for wearing masks, Hokul said on February 27. Separate federal regulations require the use of masks on public transport.

Hokul announced earlier that masks would no longer be required at businesses in the state. She said on February 27 that the mandate for schools would expire on Wednesday, March 2. Local governments, school districts and individual businesses are still allowed to require masks if they choose to.
Hokul said people can also continue to wear masks if they choose.
School staff and students have been required to wear masks at all times in buildings since classes began in September. Hokul introduced the indoor mask requirement for businesses in December as cases began to rise due to the more contagious strain of the Omicron coronavirus.
Businesses can waive mask rule if they get proof vaccinations from all customers and employees.
The number of Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations began to fall rapidly. So Hokul has taken steps to relax the state's mask-wearing rules.
