Wanda takes the subway every day to Manhattanwhere she works as a housekeeper. She said that for the past two months she has been taking such drastic measures to protect herself - since the "madman" pounced on her on the platform.

After the attack, the feeling of anxiety does not leave her. And the bike lock is the only thing that helps her deal with the anxiety when she rides the subway alone.

“With this chain, I’m more confident, because I know that no one will come up from behind and push me into the rut. When the train arrives, I open the lock and get into the carriage, ”Vela explained.

She insists that she will continue to take extreme measures until she sees how much more police officers patrol trains amid increasing incidents of crime and attacks on the subway.

“We need more police officers. But until I see them, I will continue to defend myself. This gives me confidence that no one will push me onto the tracks. And I don’t care if they steal my purse, I just don’t want to risk my life, ”Vela explained.

“But many New Yorkers will not want to chain themselves to a convoy with a bicycle chain, so we need police officers on the subway. If there are enough police officers in the metro, people will not have to take such measures, ”Wanda said.

“I remember that at one time the police were very helpful in the subway. Now you almost never see the police in the tunnel or on the platforms, ”the woman added.
