Tajik student who worked as a pedicab driver dies in New York

A guy working as a driver on a cycle rickshaw died in downtown Manhattan after, according to preliminary data, a driver from Connecticut crashed into his vehicle, knocked down a cab driver and fled the scene, reports The New York Post.

Police said the fatal collision occurred at about 23:15 pm on Friday, August 30, when three passengers were transported in a cycle rickshaw to East 42 Street and Madison Avenue.

According to the New York police, when Ibrohim Azizov was driving a pedicab, he was hit from behind by a 2017 Toyota Tacoma, as a result of which the guy was thrown from his vehicle onto 42nd Street.

The Toyota driver then drove into Brighton Beach, Brooklyn and followed Madison Avenue, police said.

The passengers, a 46-year-old woman and two 14-year-old girls, received minor injuries and were treated at Bellevue Hospital. According to the police, Azizov's death was stated in the same medical facility.

Police soon found a Toyota parked in front of 200 East 32 St., and police tracked down the alleged driver. This is 50-year-old Mario Sagastumme-Gonzalez from Stamford. Now he is accused of murder in an accident, absconding from the scene of a crime, resulting in death, and reckless driving, detectives said.

Ibrohim Azizov is a student from Tajikistan who worked as a pedicab driver after classes at the university. He knew four languages: Tajik, Russian, English and Turkish, and was also active in sports.

“He was really very humble and well-mannered. May God grant his parents patience, ”laments one of the netizens.

A Tajik journalist in New York Talabsho Mukimov posted a video on Instagram in memory of Azizov.

Note that the streets of New York have become more dangerous. As of June 30, 2021, 123 people died as a result of accidents, compared with 105 in the period before the 201 pandemic.
