The court fined Trump $10 a day: he must pay until he satisfies the demand of the New York Attorney General

A New York court found the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, guilty of contempt of court after the state attorney general's office said he failed to comply with a document requirement as part of an investigation into his company, reports CNN Politics.

“Mr Trump, I know you take your job seriously. And I take mine seriously. I hereby charge you with contempt of court and fine you $10 a day until you stop being disrespectful,” Judge Artur Engoron said during an April 000 hearing. Trump intends to appeal this decision, his lawyer Alina Khabba said and added that all the documents allegedly had already been transferred to the New York Attorney General.

The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James has been investigating the Trump Organization for over two years. The investigation uncovered numerous misleading or fraudulent misrepresentations and omissions in the Trump Organization's financial statements. Andrew Amer of the attorney general's office said Trump did not produce "a single document" that the court ordered him to provide to investigators back in December 2021.

In court, Hubba said that Trump does not believe that he is above the law, but simply does not have in writing the documents that the court required. She stated that the politician allegedly provided hundreds of thousands of documents through his assistants.

“President Trump does not email. It does not send text messages. And he doesn't have a working computer at home or anywhere else,” Hubba said, emphasizing that the records James wants to get simply don't exist.

The judge asked why Trump did not sign an affidavit in which he would have sworn that he had complied with the court's order to the best of his ability. Khabba said he would sign. “My client is an honest man, much to the dismay of some people in this room,” the lawyer said.

What the Trump Organization is suspected of

The Trump Organization is under investigation for fraudulent or misleading financial reporting practices. Prosecutors are asking the company and Trump personally to provide some financial documents related to this investigation. Hubba argued that the Attorney General's investigation "appears to have become pointless." Since it began three years ago, the Trump Organization has received six separate subpoenas and produced more than 6 million pages of documents.

“The scope of the attacks is constantly changing according to the needs of the attorney general,” Hubba said in court. “When she is not satisfied with the evidence she has received, she turns around and looks for something new.”
