On the morning of June 10, an extremely rare sunrise can be seen in the skies over New York. A darkened luminary will rise over the region. The sun will rise over New York in the shape of a crescent, 73% of the solar disk will be covered by the moon passing between the Earth and the Sun.
"People usually have to travel to see a solar eclipse," said Dr. Amy Bartholomew, professor of physics and astronomy at New Paltz University. "And this type of solar eclipse, many people never have the opportunity to see."

The historic sunrise on June 10 will occur at 5:24 am. Solar eclipses of this type and scale are very rare. According to meteorologist Joe Rao, there have been only two of these in the New York area over the past 150 years - in September 1875 and October 1959.
The moon will cover almost 75% of the sun, making it look like a crescent moon.
This rare sunrise will be seen in the New York City area, Hudson Valley, Capital Ridge and the Catskills.
