According to sources, her longtime boyfriend Felix Santiago was found on the ground outside the building with a knife by his side. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to neighbors, Mateo constantly heard verbal abuse from her boyfriend. Santiago's son committed suicide by jumping out of another window in the same apartment a few years ago.

“Every day he insulted her, said that she was no good, that she was fat, so Delma had an operation to lose weight,” said Joyce Velasquez, who called herself Mateo’s best friend.

She reported that a friend lost about 130 pounds (59 kg) after the operation about three years ago.

According to Velazquez, Santiago suffered from schizophrenia, drank alcohol and took painkillers.

Neighbors say Santiago's teenage son jumped out of the window of the same apartment a few years ago. Before the incident, Santiago gave his car to his nephew, and his son - a mobile phone and a lot of money.

“Delma told me something was wrong,” Velasquez said. - I said then: “You need to leave tonight. Looks like Felix is ​​going to do something bad.” He always said he was going to kill her. “I told her to come to my house because it looked like he wanted to kill her,” the friend added. “He gave away all his money, gave away his car and said all these things. He was going to kill her. I begged her to come to me."

Yamaiz Peña, who lives on the second floor, called the police several times over the alleged abuse by Santiago and reported when he heard Mateo's cries for help.

“Last night she was screaming like crazy, like she needed help, she needed to call the police. I did it right away and the cops arrived five minutes later. I opened the door for them and asked them to hurry up because she was screaming like crazy, he would kill her,” Peña recalls.

Police responding to an emergency call knocked on the door but were told there was no problem inside and the man refused to open the door, the sources said.

After questioning a neighbor who said he heard loud noises from the apartment, the police broke through the door and found a bloody scene inside.

The police tentatively believe that he killed the woman and then himself, although the investigation has not yet been completed.
