A new skyscraper has appeared in the center of New York: what makes it unique

The One Vanderbilt office skyscraper opened in Midtown, New York in September 2020.

Now it is the second highest in the city among the open - only One World Trade Center is higher. However, the Central Park Tower and 111 West 57th Street Tower are currently under construction. Once completed, One Vanderbilt will be the fourth tallest in the city.

One Vanderbilt is located next to the Central Station. The project was created by SL Green Realty. Mayor Bill De Blasio also took part in the creation.

The building with a height of 427 meters has 58 floors, the number of elevators is 42.

Idea and project

The idea for the construction belongs to SL Green Realty Corp. - a real estate investment fund that mainly invests in office buildings and shopping centers in New York. It first appeared back in 2000.

It was decided to build a building next to the Central Station; in those days, there were several low-rise buildings nearby and one 18-story Vanderbilt Avenue Building.

The skyscraper was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF). The project was completed in May 2014. In September of the same year, information appeared about some of the characteristics of the tower. And in December, the opening date scheduled for 2020 was announced.

It was originally planned to build 65 floors.

Start of construction

Before starting the implementation of the project, it was necessary to dismantle the buildings previously standing on the construction site.

Construction started on October 18, 2016, by the end of 2017, the foundation of the building was erected.

The pace of construction exceeded planned: already in February 2018, the 9th floor was built, and in June - the 16th floor. At the end of August 2018, the glazing of the building began.

On September 17, 2019 - that is, exactly a year ago - the building reached its design height.

The building opened on September 14, 2020.

Which companies are located in this building

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, tenants will not move into the building immediately.

Located next to the central terminal, the skyscraper is the new headquarters for many of the world's leading financial, banking, legal and real estate firms. Approximately 70% of its office space is already rented out. The following companies have located their offices there: TD Bank, Eatery Restaurant, TD Securities, DZ Bank, SL Green, MFA Financial, The Carlyle Group, McDermott Will & Emery, Sentinel Capital Partners, KPS Capital Partners, Greenberg Traurig.

In the first quarter of 2021, Chef Daniel Boulud will open a restaurant in this building called Le Pavillon. The institution will be located on 1021 sq. m, the ceiling height will be 18 meters. Guests of the restaurant will enjoy stunning views of another impressive building in New York - the Chrysler Building.
