In New York, a building caught fire due to a battery to a scooter: 38 people were injured

More than three dozen people were injured, two in critical condition, in a fire in a high-rise apartment building in Manhattan, caused by a scooter battery fire, reports News 12.
The fire broke out on November 5 morning in a 37-story building on East 52nd Street, near the East River. Photos and videos posted online show people leaning out of apartment windows. And firefighters use ropes to climb the building when smoke poured from the window. According to firefighters, some residents of the floor above, where the fire started, fled to the roof.

At a press conference, FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said the fire started in an apartment on the 20th floor from the explosion of a lithium battery connected to a scooter. 38 people were injured, including two in critical condition and five in serious condition, fire officials said. Firefighters are not yet sure how many families were left homeless as a result of the fire.

Wonderful salvation
One of the residents of the building, fleeing from the smoke, hung from the window of a 20-story building, she was miraculously saved by firefighters, writes New York Daily News.
“Without them, I would have died,” said the rescued Christina Foti. “I thought I was going to die.”
The fire started in the apartment of Foti's neighbor, the woman was sleeping at that time, so she did not immediately notice what had happened. In the end, when she woke up, her apartment was so filled with smoke that she had no choice but to hang in the window. According to firefighters, the woman hung on the window for about five minutes.
Two firemen on a rope descended from the apartment above and picked up Foti. Firefighters and the woman were lowered to an open window on the floor below, where other rescuers were waiting for them.
The woman was taken to the New York-Presbyterian Medical Center, nothing threatens her life.

Several people have died in scooter battery fires in New York City. The battery of an electric scooter caused a fire that killed an 8-year-old girl in Queens in September. And in August in Harlem, a woman and a 5-year-old girl were killed in a fire caused by a scooter battery. In September 2021, a 9-year-old boy was killed in a fire involving an e-scooter in Queens.
