In New York, they began to accept applications for the school program for the gifted and talented: what you need to know

Today, May 31, applications for the Gifted & Talented (G&T) program began at several schools in the five boroughs of New York City, reports Silive.

Last month, Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city is expanding its Gifted and Talented program to every school district starting in the 2022-2023 school year. The expansion will add 100 places for gifted and talented children in kindergarten, for a total of 2500 places in five boroughs. In the fall, a new entry point for third grade students will be launched for the first time. A total of 1000 seats will be available under this pilot program.

Applications began on May 31 on the City Department of Education (DOE) website at schools.nyc.gov/GT.

What is the Gifted and Talented Program?

Gifted & Talented Programs - Gifted & Talented - offer accelerated learning for children from kindergarten through grade 5 if they qualify. Students in the Gifted & Talented programs study the same curriculum. However, it is served to them at a faster pace, includes additional projects and develops critical thinking.

G&T programs are open to students in public, private, parochial schools, and students with disabilities. All families can apply, regardless of immigration status.

How to apply

Applications are accepted from May 31 to June 13.

You may apply to enroll your child in up to 12 G&T programs of interest. Be sure to list these programs in order of preference.

You can apply in one of the following ways:

• Online on the site MySchools.nyc
• Through the local Family Welcome Center (schools.nyc.gov/FWC)
• If you need assistance completing the application, you can call 718-935-2009 or email [email protected] .

Applicants will receive a letter with the selection results in July 2022.

Who is eligible to apply for G&T admission from Kindergarten

The program is for children who are currently attending Early Childhood Education Centers, New York City Early Education Centers (NYCEECs), or charter schools. All pre-K students were assessed by their current teachers. If the teacher determined that the child was eligible for the Gifted and Talented program, then the student was nominated for admission to G&T. Families of these children received a G&T eligibility letter prior to the program's enrollment period. If they are interested in participating in the program, they must apply after the opening of the registration period, that is, from today (from May 31).

If your child is currently attending a private or parochial school, or not yet attending school at all, but you are interested in participating in the G&T program, you can also apply on the website of the Department of Education. After the application period closes, early childhood education specialists will contact you to schedule an interview.

Who is eligible to apply for admission to the G&T program from the third grade

The top 10% of second graders in each school—as measured in four core subject areas—will be invited to apply for the G&T program from third grade.

In doing so, preference will be given to students applying to programs in their district using academic grades in four main subject areas: aEnglish, mathematics, natural sciences and social sciences.
