A large-scale construction project called Two Bridges Towers is being implemented in Manhattan. These will be four skyscrapers with a height of 63 to 80 floors (from 222 to 307 meters), which will be erected on the East River embankment, which is near the Manhattan Bridge.

The future residential towers will house about 3000 apartments; a quarter of them will go on sale "at an affordable price."

Last year, the 258-meter-high One Manhattan Square residential skyscraper was built on the East River in Two Bridges. Four towers will be built near it as part of a large-scale project.

It is planned to invest a lot in the improvement of the territory. For example, $ 15 million - to renovate three district parks, $ 12,5 million - to repair nearby public housing, another $ 40 million - to restore the East Broadway metro station.

Skyscrapers will be located at the following addresses: 247 Cherry St., 260 South St., 259 Clinton St.

The Two Bridges Towers project appeared in 2016, but only now the court proceedings have ended due to urban planning zoning - the location and height of the buildings raised many questions from experts.

For example, the Urban Development Department initially determined that since the new buildings would create only a “minor modification” of the area, there is no need to obtain city council approval or go through the Unified Land Use Procedure (ULURP).

In 2019, Manhattan County President Gale Brewer and the New York City Council filed a lawsuit against the City Planning Commission (CPC) decision. They argued that the projects could not be implemented because they did not comply with current zoning laws and must be approved by ULURP. 6sqft.

State Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron sided with the applicants and stopped the project.

But in August 2020, in a unanimous decision, the court ruled that "the buildings described in the applications do not contradict the applicable zoning requirements, therefore, the approval of CPC applications has a rational basis and does not contradict the law."

Also, the court ruling states that the height of the towers corresponds to the permissible ones, and special permission for their construction is not required.
