Body parts of dismembered man and woman found in Long Island park

Long Island police are trying to identify human remains found in a popular suburban park. According to Ottawa.citynews, passers-by found parts of dismembered bodies right on the street.
A girl who was walking to school on Thursday, February 29, saw a severed hand on the side of the road in Southards Pond Park, about 40 kilometers east of New York. Police later found another arm and one leg nearby. The body parts belonged to a man, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
On the evening of Friday, February 1, police said that in addition, a search dog found a head, an arm and parts of two legs, which are believed to belong to a woman.
Kevin Beirer, commander of the Suffolk County Police Department's homicide unit, said the remains were not on the street for long.

“Based on their condition, it would appear that they had been here for several days, if not hours,” Beirer said. Investigators are trying to identify the man based on tattoos on his arm, he said. Police said the search of the park has been completed. The incident is classified as murder. Investigators are now trying to figure out whether the MS-13 gang is involved. After the bodies were found, recess at nearby primary and secondary schools had to be moved indoors. Psychological services are being provided to students, school district officials said.
“This is an extremely troubling incident that could happen in any community, especially so close to our schools,” a school district spokesperson said in a statement. – The safety and mental health of our students is our top priority. This incident has the potential to cause great concern for our students, particularly the high school students who were directly impacted by this situation on their way to school this morning.”
