Elections in New York: how the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants plans to revive the city's economy

Political life in New York is very busy this summer. The city has just passed the primaries, and the candidates, wasting no time, started campaigning - they are preparing for the elections in November. Tamara Laschik is one of the candidates. An American of Ukrainian descent is running for the state parliament from the Republican Party. This is stated in the video. "Voices of America".

She calls herself a moderate republican, as proof - she campaigns very openly and democratically, crossing the city on a rented bike. She is building her campaign around economic and city recovery after the pandemic and protests.

“Most of all I communicate with the owners of businesses and restaurants, we decide what they want, when they plan to open and what they need for this,” says Tamara.

She began campaigning from a part of the city that New Yorkers themselves have long called the Ukrainian Village. This area for the start of the campaign was not chosen by chance - Tamara was born into a family of Ukrainian immigrants, and her childhood was spent in the Ukrainian Village.

“My whole life is connected with the Ukrainian community. I was baptized in the Ukrainian Catholic Church in New York, where I got married. I was a member of Ukrainian organizations such as Plast, went to a Ukrainian school, ”says the candidate.

Laschik counts very much on the support of the Ukrainian Village community and business. The Ukrainians themselves, regardless of their political affiliation, rejoice that in the event of her victory, they will finally get in the power of a person who will protect their interests.

“I know many Ukrainian Democrats who like my ideas. My main goal is to get New York on its feet after the pandemic, ”Tamara shares her plans.

It is not without reason that Laschik chose economic recovery as a key aspect of her campaign, because she is a financier with many years of experience, having worked in the banking sector for more than 26 years helping to overcome crises.

It was this anti-crisis experience that inspired Tamara to run for the state parliament. She is the first Ukrainian American to take part in the race. And it happened quite by accident.

“Last year I met people who were involved in politics. We talked and they liked my ideas. They told me to try to apply to parliament, ”explained Tamara.

In addition to communication and campaigning, Laschik also raises funds for his election campaign. For a candidate, this financial support of the electorate is extremely necessary, because at the initial stage it demonstrates the potential of the candidate. Laschik expects to receive part of the funds for the campaign from the party.

Tamara believes in her success, says that she would not run if she did not understand that she has every chance to win, and most importantly - to help the city and society.
