2024 has been a big year for museum exhibitions in New York. But the year is not over yet. Time-out tells about interesting exhibitions that are worth visiting before they close.
The list is in chronological order so you can see where to go first.
1. Abraham Lincoln: His Life in Print at Grolier Club
Closes December 28, 2024
Learn how Abraham Lincoln became a lawyer through self-discipline and won the White House through literature. He remains one of the most widely read figures in the 160 years since his death at the Grolier Club.
The exhibition uses original editions of books and ephemera to create a broad conceptual portrait of the man.
The exhibition features important editions of Lincoln's greatest achievements, including the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, the Cooper Union Speech, his debates with Stephen A. Douglas, and more. More than 150 exhibits chronicle the life of the 16th U.S. president.

2. Survival Piece #5: Portable Orchard at The Whitney
Closes January 5, 2025
In Manhattan's Meatpacking District, The Whitney is home to a grove of 18 citrus trees. Exhibition Survival Piece #5: Portable Orchard was conceived in 1972 by Helen Mayer and Newton Harrison. This pioneering eco-art project is on display at the museum for the first time since its debut over 50 years ago.

3. Ice Cold: An Exhibition of Hip-Hop Jewelry at AMNH
Closes January 5, 2025
At this Show Dozens of incredible necklaces, rings, watches, chains, and more are on display. These pieces have been worn by some of the most famous people in music. Some of the standout pieces include T-Pain’s Big Ass Chain, Ghostface Killah’s Eagle Armband, Nicki Minaj’s Barbie Pendant, Beyoncé’s Nail Rings, Cardi B’s Nipple Covers, and Slick Rick’s Crown.

4. Taking Care: The Black Angels of Sea View Hospital
Closes January 5, 2025
Have you ever heard of the Black Angels? They were a group of nurses who risked their lives to care for tuberculosis patients at Sea View Hospital on Staten Island. They played a major role in reducing the death rate from the bacterial disease in the United States. You can learn more about the nurses in a new exhibit that highlights the stories of these little-known figures.

5. We Are Here: Scenes from the Streets at ICP
Closes January 6, 2025
Explore contemporary street photography by over 30 international iconic street photographers including Devin Allen, Shoichi Aoki, Farnaz Damnabi, Debrani Das, Romuald Hazoume, Youssef Krashe, Jose Rivas, Randa Shaath, Jamel Shabazz, Trevor Stuerman, Alexey Titarenko and Nontsikelelo Veleko. The exhibition is an in-depth exploration of contemporary life in various public spaces. Some photographs date back to the 1970s.

6. Star Light Star Bright in Lower Manhattan

Wishing trees have been around the world for centuries as a symbol of opportunity.
When you attach a tag to a tree, you think about the future you want to see. Now you can do just that at a public art installation in the Financial District.
At the Star Light Star Bright exhibit, visitors can attach their wishes to an illuminated star-shaped steel frame. The frame, designed by Hou de Sousa, is made from 1200 colorful chains and will be installed in the plaza in front of 140 Broadway at Cedar Street.

7. Liberty the Tattooed Lady at City Reliquary
Closes January 12, 2025
The Statue of Liberty has long been a source of inspiration for tattoo artists. An exhibition at the quirky City Reliquary features vintage State of Liberty tattoos.
The exhibit also traces the history of tattooing in New York City since the 1800s. Lady Liberty has been a popular tattoo subject since she appeared in New York Harbor.

8. The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum
Closes January 26, 2025
The largest exhibition of Brooklyn artists in the two-century history of the Brooklyn Museum, the expansive show features artists at all stages of their careers, working across a full range of disciplines—from drawing, painting, collage, and photography to sculpture, video, and performance.
The exhibition features over 200 artists, reflecting the range of creativity in the area.
From Tracy Dawn Williams' documentary photography of the Brooklyn waterfront to Richard Haining's stunning sculpture made from reclaimed wood from the city's water towers.

9. New Start, New Hope in the Garment District
Closes January 2025
People often talk about the New York skyline after dark. The office lights and illuminated bridges sparkle like stars in the night sky. But the Garment District
takes lighting to a new level with his public art installation New Start, New Hope.
Created by local artist Xin Song, it consists of 135 decorative lanterns that dot the city streets along three Broadway plazas.
The lanterns hanging in the air glow green, red and blue. Each one is decorated with intricate patterns. Some of them resemble flowers, diamonds or clovers.
Find them in the Broadway squares between 36th and 39th Streets.
