A woman was killed by a falling piece of the facade of an old building in New York

On Tuesday, February 13, an elderly woman who was shoveling recently fallen snow in New York City died in an accident. According to Fox News, a huge piece of the decorative brick facade of a three-story building fell on a woman.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that 74-year-old Dale Singer was on the porch of her Brooklyn home when part of the historic building fell and killed her.

Arriving at the scene, police found that Singer was unconscious and showed no signs of life. An ambulance immediately took the pensioner to Maimonides Medical Center in serious condition, but it was not possible to save her - the victim died in the hospital.

Police said preliminary reports indicate the three-story home collapsed while a woman was clearing snow from the porch of her home.

A preliminary investigation by Department of Buildings inspectors found that a decorative beam on the front façade had collapsed onto the front staircase and porch.

Forensic engineers from the department conducted a full inspection of the building and ordered it vacated due to the condition of the façade. There was no indication that the collapse was a direct result of the snowstorm, department spokesman Andrew Rudansky said.

The owner of the building was issued a violation for failure to comply with building maintenance regulations, ordered to hire a structural engineer, and ordered to submit an engineer's report to the department on the condition of the property.
