Spooky Memorial Day weekend: 5 killings in New York

The weekend, May 23 and 24, brought a wave of violence to New York. Of the five people, three died from stab wounds, one man was beaten to death with a piece of cinder block. Two weekend killings remained unsolved as of Monday, May 25th.

The ongoing lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic is exacerbating the situation and could lead to even more violence in the city, according to a law enforcement source. “People can't go out, the financial situation of many people is dire, they don't know where their next check will come from,” the source said. "There's a lot of negativity going on."

He added that this week will also be difficult.

Series of killings

The first murder the weekend happened in the Bronx on Saturday, May 23. The police station received a call from Ho Avenue. The cops who arrived at the scene found a 35-year-old man with three gunshot wounds in the lobby of the building. He was rushed to the Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Vincent Gibson, a 42-year-old from the Bronx, was later arrested and charged with murder and illegal possession of weapons, police said.

Second kill occurred on Sunday, May 24th. Deidra Borders, 56, was found in her bedroom on Osgood Avenue on Staten Island at about 11:45 a.m. with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the crime scene.

The third murder happened the same day. At 18:45 in eastern New York, police found a 23-year-old man with stab wounds in his stomach, back, and neck. An unidentified man was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Fourth kill occurred three hours later at the Bronx crossroads in the Fordham estate area, and a 37-year-old man was found with stab wounds. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was declared dead.

On May 25, it was revealed that the victim was Curtis Nicholas, a gang member allegedly involved in an incident earlier in the day. As the police explained, Nicholas was part of a group of people who accused another man, Deyun Murray, of pushing a woman out of an apartment building in the Bronx, leaving her in critical condition.

Murray was taken into custody in connection with the death of Nicholas, but he was not charged.

Police said they had taken into custody a 29-year-old man in the case, but as of Monday morning, May 25, no charges had been filed.

Fifth kill also happened on sunday. The victim was 25-year-old Galindo Terrazas, found on 39th Avenue in Jackson Heights, next to a bloodied cinder block. He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 18 p.m.

It is worth noting that last year, six murders were committed in the city on the weekend on the eve of Memorial Day.

As previously reported, the number New York City firearms incidents increased 188% in just a week, from May 10 to 16. Over the same period last year, 8 such crimes occurred, compared with 23 in the current year. The number of killings doubled, increasing from four to eight.
