Exhibition of famous artist from Azerbaijan opened in New York

An exhibition of the famous Azerbaijani artist Aida Mahmudova PASTPRESENTFUTURE has opened at the Sapar Contemporary Incubator gallery in New York. Writes about it Day.az.

This is a new series of works by the artist. The exhibition explores the fragmentation of being through memories distorted in time and landscape. PASTPRESENTFUTURE is the second solo exhibition of the artist in the USA. It was organized in support of the leading women artists of Central Asia and the Caucasus.

In her new work, Aida Makhmudova combines past, present and future to create works that exist outside of external constraints - ideological, political or religious. The emotional and instinctive process of creation comes to the fore. As a result, works are bright and fragile in their essence, the inspiration for which the artist drew from working with material.

The use of herbs and dry plants in combination with impressionistic brushstrokes in her works allows us to trace the author's connection with his homeland. It seems to penetrate through the surface of the earth with an artistic eye and fills the surrounding nature with a sense of nostalgia.

The works of Aida Mahmudova, who lives and works in Baku, are harmoniously combined with the physical properties of the materials she chose and her favorite earthly palette. The artist's deep and intuitive exploration encompasses a wide range of universal human feelings such as love, loss, memory and desire. According to Aida, “being a part of society, we ourselves impose certain restrictions on our concept of being, on our interaction with other people - as a result, we lose the channels of innate connection with the world. For me, art has no boundaries, it is open to any communicative variation, and the artistic process expresses an attempt to exfoliate some fundamental principles, anthropogenic and therefore fragile in nature. "

About the artist

In 2006, Aida graduated from the Central College of Art and Design named after St. Martin, London University of the Arts, with a degree in visual arts. Makhmudova's work has been frequently exhibited internationally, and her portfolio includes collective and solo exhibitions in Belgium, London, Rome, New York, Moscow and Baku.

Among the selected personal exhibitions, one can highlight "The Elusive Light", Deweer Gallery, Otegem (2017); In Passage, Leila Heller Gallery, New York (2015) and Inner World, Barbarian Art Gallery, Zurich (2013). Makhmudova's works were presented in the collective exhibition Love Me, Love Me Not at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, as well as as part of the VITA VITALE exhibition curated by Artwise at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015.
