Always wanted to swim in the pool, and feel in the river? You may be able to do this in New York.
The City Economic Development Corporation published on Wednesday, September 18, a message requesting potential pool operators to submit plans for a self-cleaning pool on the Lower East Side.
The Economic Development Corporation of New York is reaching out to those who "can offer the public a filtered East River flotation complex to provide safe recreational access to clean water." If this is realized, what the proposal calls “a tradition of swimming in the river dating back to the late 1800s” will return to the city.
This project will be the first urban river swimming facility in the country.
The concept of a self-cleaning pool was first represented New Yorkers in 2010 by + POOL, which is developing plans for outdoor swimming in the 9 000 square-foot complex.
+ POOL Deputy Director Kara Meyer told THE CITY that they did not know about the city’s plans for a pool in the East River, so they would be happy to submit their application.
“We look forward to hearing,” she told the publication.
Meyer’s team has already explored potential locations along the city’s waterfront and have been seriously monitoring the East River section near Brooklyn Bridge Park, but they eventually focused on the Lower East Side.
The City Corporation for Economic Development says it will evaluate proposals received and inform local residents throughout the process.
