Since then, the city office (Office of the City Clerk) has registered 382 marriages online, but a total of about 3700 applications for marriage have already been received in this way, said Michael McSweeney, a spokesman for the agency. The Office will not be able to deal with this queue until September, so new applications are registered no earlier than in the fall.

Before the pandemic began, the Office issued from 100 to 200 certificates of marriage daily, but when working online, this number decreased due to the fact that not all personnel were trained to work online. To increase the number of daily ceremonies, the Office actively trains staff to work in the new system.

“As we train our workers, we will have more people and we can increase the number of ceremonies,” McSweeney said.

Currently, about 20 office employees are trained to work with the new online system. But only 10 people hold ceremonies on a regular basis.

Some time intervals are reserved for urgent marriages - for example, for people who have visa problems or insurance problems that a marriage can solve. And some time intervals may be freed in case of cancellation of the planned ceremonies.

On April 18, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a decree allowing couples to arrange marriage remotely. Similar measures have been taken in Cayahoga County (Ohio) and throughout Colorado.

In late April, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson announced the Cupid project and a move to the online marriage certificate process.

The project is a joint development of the Office of the City Secretary and the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

To take advantage of the program, couples schedule an online ceremony. The marriage is carried out by video conference, after which the couple can download the marriage certificate.

“We need moments of joy more than ever, and we will not let the pandemic get in the way of true love,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio, presenting the program. "All couples who are looking forward to formalizing their relationship, know that your city is here with you."
