The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved a grant to New York City under the Lost Wage Assistance Program. This is stated in the message of the agency, made on Sunday, August 23.
FEMA grant funding will allow New York to provide $ 300 per week - in addition to state unemployment benefits - to unemployed people who have lost their source of income due to COVID-19.
In March, Congress approved a series of emergency changes designed to support people who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
The unemployed received additional federal unemployment benefits of $ 600 per week. However, these payments expired at the end of July, and for the past three weeks New Yorkers have not received much-needed support.

Democrats, Republicans and US President Donald Trump are discussing the implementation of a new, larger plan to help Americans in the face of the pandemic. However, they have not yet been able to agree. Therefore, on August 8, the president signed a decree extending the additional weekly federal payment, but reduced it to $ 400 per week.
In accordance with the presidential decree, the costs of $ 100 per week are to be borne by the states, and $ 300 by FEMA. Thus, the total amount of payments to the unemployed will be $ 400 per week.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said earlier that New York will not seek funding from FEMA... He stated that the state was not ready to spend an additional $ 100 a week on every unemployed person, and also cited distrust of the federal agency as the reason for his categorical position.
On Sunday, August 23rd, New York State authorities nevertheless agreed to implement this program and sent an application to FEMA. Thanks to this decision, New Yorkers who lost their jobs during the pandemic will be able to receive benefits of $ 300 a week (only from FEMA, the state cannot afford to add $ 100 to this amount). Payments will be made until the end of the year.
