On March 1, 2020, a new law on the reduction of disposable plastic bags will enter into force in New York State. About whom he touches, writes the publication Only in new york.
About the law
More than 23 billion plastic bags are used in New York every year. To affect this large-scale problem, disposable plastic bags have already been banned in eight US states: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Oregon, Vermont. Now New York will join their ranks, the source said. Starting March 1, 2020, the state will enter into force a new law on the reduction of disposable plastic bags.
Plastic bags often end up in waterways, landfills, and trees. They cause serious harm to wildlife. As part of a serious effort to prevent the further production of plastic bags, they will be banned from distribution.
Who will be affected by the ban
As noted, this law does not apply to all disposable packages. In particular, it will bypass the packages used:
- for packing unprocessed products of animal origin or other unpacked food products;
- for flowers, plants or objects that require the use of plastic to avoid contamination, prevent damage, or for health reasons;
- wholesale packaging of fruits, vegetables, grains, sweets;
- household goods such as nuts, bolts, and screws;
- live insects such as crickets, crustaceans, mollusks;
- other items requiring waterproof containers;
- sliced products or custom-made products;
- plastic bags sold in bulk, this category includes: garbage bags, sandwich packaging or pet cleaning bags, clothing bags, and pharmacy medicine bags.
How the law will affect retailers
Retailers who violate the new state law will be punished. So, after the first warning, they will receive a fine of $ 250, repeated violations during the same calendar year will entail a fine of $ 500.
