Winter storm brings New York's biggest snowfall of the season

Snow shovels are finally needed in New York City, thanks to a winter storm that hit the northeastern United States. This storm did not set any records for the amount of snow that fell, but pleased those who had been waiting for snow all winter, reports Accu Weather.

On Monday and Tuesday (February 27-28), snow fell from northern New Jersey to southern Maine. On Tuesday morning, sleet knocked down tree branches and created confusion on roads along Interstate 95.

Sleet covered the sidewalks and cars parked along the road. Special vehicles worked to clear the roads.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) imposed a speed limit on Interstate 90 from the New York state line to western Springfield on Tuesday morning due to slippery roads.

“MassDOT is deploying approximately 1 pieces of equipment to combat snow and ice,” the department wrote.

Traffic delays weren't limited to roads only.

Several northeastern airports reported flight delays and cancellations on Tuesday. New York's LaGuardia Airport accounted for the most flight cancellations in the northeast, with more than 160, according to flight aware.

Boston Logan International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport reported flight delays and cancellations on Tuesday. John F. Kennedy reported over 400 delays and Boston reported over 300 delays.

While many schools in the northeast closed on Tuesday due to snowfall, some chose "remote" days. Mount St. Mary's College, located in Newburgh, New York, was one of those schools that opted for a distance learning day.

The largest amount of snow fell in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. West Greenwich is located on the border of Rhode Island and Connecticut, south of Providence.

New Yorkers happy to see snow

In Boston, snow has turned the city into a winter wonderland. Northeastern University shared photos of a campus covered in light snow on Tuesday morning.
