The COVID-19 pandemic brought not only health concerns, but also financial problems. If you, too, have reasons to worry about your financial well-being, the New York City Administration helps to deal with money.
The mayor's office of the metropolis launched Financial Empowerment Centers... As part of this program, professional financial professionals provide free one-on-one advice and training on strategies for solving money problems. The identity of the client can remain confidential if he expresses such a desire.
Consultations are available in 11 languages (including Russian) to everyone, regardless of immigration status and income level.
Specialists Financial Empowerment Centers will help everyone free of charge in solving such issues:
- Money management and setting up a spending plan.
- Negotiating with lenders about open loans, including student loans (tips for settling student loan debt during COVID-19 are available here).
- Drafting letters to creditors asking them to reduce payments or temporarily suspend payments due to financial difficulties.
- Debt minimization strategy development.
- Clarification of the conditions of access to local, regional and federal resources in case of emergencies.
- Opening a bank account.
- Separation of personal and business finance.
In a pandemic, consultations are conducted over the telephone. You can sign up online through your account at the Financial Empowerment Portal (if you do not have it, you will need to create it) or by calling 311.
You can use the services of your consultant as long as you need. Clients who have attended at least three consultations do significantly well in meeting their financial goals.
At the first consultation, specialists assess your financial situation, check your credit history and draw up a plan to achieve your individual goals. At the second and third consultations, they evaluate your progress and help to define and achieve new goals.
As a result, consultations help:
- reduce your debts;
- improve your credit rating;
- develop a habit of saving money;
- balance your budget.
