Cuomo extended moratorium on eviction of tenant debtors in New York

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the extension of the moratorium on eviction of tenant debtors until the end of August. This gives an additional 60 days of deferred payment of rent for individuals and businesses affected by COVID-19 quarantine, writes Eater.

The moratorium, which, according to the previous order of the governor, was supposed to end in late June, is now valid until August 20.

“I cannot tell you what will happen on August 20,” Cuomo said when asked about the reasons for choosing this date. "But I'm sure no matter what happens, we can handle it."

Cuomo also said that the withdrawal of interest or late payment interest would be prohibited. In addition, tenants have the right to use their security deposit to pay rent.

Tenants who use their insurance deposits as rental payments will later be required to gradually make insurance deposits again, but after the situation has normalized.

Regarding mortgages, the governor assured that “the state is working to find a solution” for people paying them.

And most of the city’s small businesses will be able to open only in the third stage, which is not expected before June. The extension of the moratorium on eviction of tenants for non-payment until August potentially gives employees and owners of such businesses about two months of work to accumulate funds to start paying rent.
