Twice a year, the setting sun illuminates the streets of Manhattan at right angles, creating one of the most amazing sunset scenes you can see in New York City. Such sunsets are called Manhattanhenge, recalls ABC7.
Manhattanhenge is the phenomenon where the setting sun aligns with the city's street grid, illuminating each intersection north and south. It takes place every year around the end of May and mid-July. Twice in full sun and twice in half sun, weather permitting. (“Full sun” and “half sun” refer to how much of the sun's disk is visible above the horizon.)
If you missed Manhattanhenge on May 29 and 30, then you have a chance to see this charming spectacle on July 11 and 12, at 20:20 and 20:21, respectively.

Where and how to watch Manhattanhenge in New York
If you want to capture a picture worthy of the occasion, follow these tips from AccuWeather:
1. Plan ahead: be sure to check the weather and book your spot well before sunset. Like any major event in New York City, Manhattanhenge draws crowds.
2. Choose the correct street: find a street with an unobstructed view of the horizon. Here are the best streets to watch Manhattanhenge:
- 57th Street
- 42nd Street
- 34th Street
- 23rd street
- 14th Street
- Tudor City Overpass, Manhattan
- Hunter's Point South Park on Long Island
3. Take the right equipment with you and check its settings. If you really want to get the perfect shot, bring along a tripod and a quality camera. Make sure your settings are ready for low light conditions. Choose a high aperture setting like F/16 and make sure the ISO is as low as possible for your camera.
4. Experiment with different objects: try to select something in the foreground to focus. For example, on someone watching the sunset, or on a fountain. This will create a silhouette for a more attractive shot.
