Hundreds of meteors per hour possible: how to see the Tau Herkulid meteor storm online

A brand new meteor shower could light up Memorial Day holiday skies on Monday and Tuesday (May 30-31). You can watch it live online. Space.com.

This event, called the Tau-Herculides meteor shower, has the potential to become a so-called meteor storm of 1000 shooting stars per hour on the night of Monday to Tuesday (May 30 to 31), when the Earth passes through the debris of comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. But it may also happen that from the Earth this debris will not be visible and there will be nothing to look at, scientists are not yet sure what to expect. One NASA scientist described the event as “all or nothing.”

You can watch the meteor shower live on the night of Monday to Tuesday at live broadcast of the Virtual Telescope project. It is led by astrophysicist Gianluca Masi from Ceccano, Italy. The free webcast will begin at 00:00 EDT (04:00 GMT) on May 31st. You will be able to see data from cameras in Arizona and Brazil.
