After weeks of warm weather and almost two years without snow, New York City is in full-blown winter. There is no promise of ice, but snowfall and a real frosty whirlwind are already close. NYC Parks They promise to organize a real winter holiday in New York parks, get your skates and sleds ready and put on warm hats.
Temperatures on Friday 19 January are forecast to hover around -1 degree Celsius with light snow. Temperatures will drop this evening with wind chills near freezing. In New York City, it will feel like 7 degrees at times.
By the end of the day, 5 to 10 centimeters of snow is expected in New York. If the storm passes closer to the coast than expected, up to 12 centimeters of rain could fall in New York, Long Island and Connecticut. An Arctic air mass will bring real cold this weekend. But this is definitely not a reason to be sad. There hasn't been white, fluffy snow in the city for so long that every extra centimeter is a joy. But not for snow clearers, of course. The weekend promises to be fun: it's time to take the sled out of the closet and go to the park.
During heavy snowfalls, NYC Parks offers a “snow day,” a day of free organized recreation at several parks throughout the city. Activities include safe, adult-supervised sledding (sleds will be available at each Snow Day location), snowman-building contests, snow angels, friendly snowball fights, music and free hot chocolate.
