Families of New York City public school students will receive $375 per child in the federal coronavirus relief program. Payments should help parents pay for their child's meals during the summer, reports Silive.com.
New York State continues to distribute Coronavirus Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) food benefits. They are awarded to all families with children who are eligible for a free school lunch. Because all New York City public school students are eligible for free lunch, regardless of family income, all families in the school system will receive these one-time summer benefits. Families whose children are in private schools and receive free meals through the federal school lunch program will also receive money.
Amounts and details
Each family will receive $375 per child during the summer. They will be issued in the form of a special social card. The card can be used to purchase any food:
- fruits and vegetables;
- meat, poultry and fish;
- dairy;
- bread and cereals;
- other foods (such as snacks and soft drinks);
- seeds and plants to grow what can be used as food.
Benefits cannot be used to purchase certain items: alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco products, vitamins, medicines, dietary supplements, and any non-food items.
Families do not need to apply for this benefit, it will be calculated and sent automatically. Those who are already receiving benefits, food stamps, etc., the money will come to their social cards. For children enrolled in Medicaid, the money will be credited to Medicaid cards. Everyone else will receive a new social card by mail.

Free summer meals in New York
This summer in New York City, children in all five boroughs are being offered free on-the-go meals.
The City Department of Education (DOE) is offering free meals to all individuals under the age of 18 at select locations beginning June 28.
Places for the distribution of free food will be located in schools, community centers or parks. No registration, paperwork or ID is required to receive free breakfast or lunch. Breakfasts will be served there from 8 to 9:15 am, and lunches from 11:00 to 13:15. On July 4, US Independence Day, this service will not operate.
