New Yorkers can now select an "X" for their gender on state-issued ID cards. This change is part of the Gender Recognition Act, which was passed by the New York State Assembly in 2021. CNN.
New Yorkers can change their gender to an "X" on their driver's license, study permit, or ID card at all Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) offices statewide. Starting in July, residents will also be able to change their gender designation online.
“We're getting ready to celebrate Pride Month in a few days, and I'm thrilled to announce this historic change, which represents another victory in our fight to ensure equality and respect for the LGBT community,” said New York Governor Katie Hokul. “Every person, regardless of their gender identity or expression, deserves to have a document that reflects who they really are.”

The Gender Recognition Law will come into full force on June 24. In addition to allowing New Yorkers to change their gender marker on documents, the law will allow New Yorkers to choose their gender identity when filing lawsuits. In addition, when renewing ID and changing gender and name, there will no longer be a requirement to publish information about the name change in the local newspaper. Also, now the parent will be able to choose how he will be designated in the child's birth certificate: "father", "mother" or "parent".
With the new legislation, New York joins 24 states that offer a gender-neutral marker on official documents.
