About the festival
The pandemic has revived the classic American drive-in tradition. This format of entertainment can become popular in a pandemic, as it allows you to maintain a distance from strangers.
One New York City organization, the MASC Hospitality Group, has decided to host the Uptown Drive-In Festival in a parking lot near the famous Yankee Stadium. They had this idea back in March when it became clear that many of their events, such as the Bronx Night Market, would be canceled this summer.
“This is a food festival and cultural event as well as a classic drive-in,” said co-owner Marco Shalma. "We wanted to create a space where people can eat, watch movies or comedians, play bingo, and even hang out in a safe place."
Event Formats
Events will range from karaoke evenings to film screenings of all genres and even thematic events such as evenings or LGBTQ evenings.
First of all, the organizer will focus on demonstrating New York talents. To ensure safety during concerts and feed guests, it is planned to attract about 40 people.
A stage with large screens will be set up next to Yankee Stadium, where talented artists will perform. The sound will be transmitted from the PA system (from English - public address system) to the cars of the visitors.
It was originally planned to hold events every weekend, starting on July 4.

However, the interest in the festival was so great that the organizer decided to expand the program for the whole week.
Events will run until August, Shalma said. “We have already registered more than 9000 people, and so many amazing people came to offer cooperation,” he said.
How will this happen in practice?
For the safety of guests and to comply with the rules of social distance, cars will be asked to park at a distance of three meters (10 feet) from each other. To participate in each event will be able to register a maximum of 200 cars.
The organizer also plans to carefully consider the food system so that visitors do not have to go out for food from their cars.
The price of the ticket is not yet known: MASC works with local partners to agree on a cost account. According to Shalma, it is assumed that each car will be serviced in an all-inclusive format.
Who will get free tickets
Free tickets will be reserved and issued to nurses, doctors, police officers, EMS employees and some other employees in vital areas. Thus, the organizer seeks to support them during this difficult time for everyone.
Several tickets will be given out free of charge during the drawing. “We're trying to create a sense of normalcy during this time,” Shalma said. "It will be a celebration of New York's resilience and we are very excited."
It is worth noting that the stadium itself has nothing to do with this festival. Events will take place in the parking lot next to the stadium.
Recall that from May 15 car cinemas to open in New York.
