New York City Mayor Eric Adams is giving city workers fired for refusing COVID-19 vaccinations a chance to get their jobs back if they quickly get two shots, reports New York Post.
On June 17, letters came to former municipal employees who were fired for refusing to be vaccinated. They informed recipients that they had the option to return to work if they were fully vaccinated. Former employees have until June 30 to receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with a second dose by August 15.
“Once you provide proof of full vaccination (both doses), you will be reinstated in the municipal service with your last paycheck. You will be able to return to work within two weeks of providing confirmation,” said Marisa Caggiano, NYPD Assistant Commissioner for Human Rights.
These letters were sent to all former New York City employees, with the exception of those who worked in the Department of Education. They will receive letters later this summer, sources said.
“The mayor’s goal has always been vaccination, not dismissal”
“We hope they will join the 97% of urban workers who have already got their chance. But no one will be able to return to work and receive wages until they are fully vaccinated. The mayor's goal has always been vaccination, not dismissal, ”New York City Hall said.

In February, Adams fired 1430 city employees. Among them are 914 people in the Department of Health and 36 in the NYPD for not being vaccinated against COVID-19. In March, the city fired another 101 workers. More than 6000 city workers who have applied for exemption from vaccination (for religious or medical reasons) have not yet received a decision.
