There are many different laws in New York. Therefore, it is not surprising that you can violate some of them without even knowing about it. This publication writes Only in your state.
With the onset of winter, each driver, before entering the car, naturally wants to warm it up. However, according to the 1210 article of the New York State Vehicle Law and the Road Code, this is completely illegal.
Thus, the law on maintenance-free vehicles says: "The person in charge of driving a vehicle must not leave it without first stopping the engine, blocking the ignition system, removing the key from the vehicle and braking."
Simply put, the law states that you cannot insert keys into the ignition and leave the car while the engine is running. Therefore, if you do not want to receive a large fine, never leave the car unattended in the winter while it is warming up.

At the same time, there are several exceptions to this law.
Firstly, for drivers who have a remote control for the starter to warm up the car (in this case, the key is not technically located in the ignition switch, so you do not break the law).
Secondly, if you start the car and warm it up, but leave the passenger compartment only in order to clear the glass of snow (in this case, you also will not break the law, since the machine will be under your supervision).
