New York to pay special allowances to families of COVID survivors

“I feel a serious responsibility to our frontline workers who understood the dangers of the virus but went to work anyway because we needed it,” Cuomo said during a press briefing in Manhattan.

The office of Mayor Bill de Blasio, who faced a growing number of calls for benefits last week, has credited himself with these merits.

“Thank you @NYGovCuomo for supporting our plan to provide benefits to city workers who died from COVID-19,” City Hall spokesman Freddie Goldstein wrote on Twitter minutes after Cuomo's announcement. “Every day, but especially on Memorial Day, it’s so important to stop and remember those we have lost and do our best to support the families they left behind.”

Cuomo has repeatedly stated his support for the idea of ​​benefits for the families of the victims. These payments will be made by local pension and state funds, he explained.
