Why New Yorkers Fake Numbers
The MTA operates 7 toll bridges and 2 toll tunnels in New York City. At all intersections, cashless fares are provided using cameras and scanners. Motorists are charged either through E-ZPass or on an invoice sent by mail. A vehicle with an invalid license plate will avoid being charged a toll because the scanner will not be able to identify the owner of the vehicle.
In recent years, New York City has issued tens of thousands of fines and impounded thousands of vehicles due to motorists ignoring toll bills and covering license plates with paper so the scanner couldn't read them.
