Russian-speaking director of a kindergarten in New York was accused of racism

Former executive director of the Battery Park City Nursery in Manhattan, Rodion Babaisakov, is under investigation for allegedly racist social media posts. Outraged parents of kindergarten students shared messages, including on Facebook, in which Babaisakov called the 44th US President Barack Obama a "traitor" and used racist insults against him, writes ABC 7 NY.

He also reposted a post by the group Make Michigan Great Again with racist attacks on Congressman Ilhan Omar. He also blamed China for the coronavirus using obscene anti-Asian jokes.

“Their response to our outrage was, ‘If you don’t like it, then leave the school,’ said one parent, who requested anonymity. “But some parents don’t have that option.”

She said that she and other parents were threatened and intimidated by the kindergarten administration for speaking out.

“This is a very terrible situation we are in,” she said.

Babaisakov no longer works at the kindergarten after the incident, he was the executive director of the Universal Pre-Kindergarten gardening program, not the director of the kindergarten. His social media posts were passed on to the Special Investigator. The Battery Park City Nursery is funded by the Universal Pre-Kindergarten program.

Babaisakov commented on the situation and denied accusations of racism.

“I think people took my posts out of context and made me look like a racist without knowing me,” he said. – I made these posts without any bad intentions or prejudice. I understand that others may have taken this as something done with malicious intent, and I sincerely apologize if I caused this misconception. But these posts don't define me or who I am."
