Hudson cruise with aromatic tacos and cocktails: unique floating restaurant opens in New York

Refreshing agave spirits and delicious tacos are now served aboard a three-story boat on the Hudson River, New York's only floating Mexican restaurant. More details about this institution were told by the publication Time-out.

La Barca Cantina, New York's only Mexican restaurant on the water, has reopened to the public with a summer menu inspired by street food.

Located at Pier 81, adjacent to the North River Lobster Company partner restaurant, La Barca occupies three levels with an expansive open top deck with bar and tables, and a two-level interior space with two bars.

What's more, it makes short cruises several times a day, five days a week, offering stunning views of the New York City skyline.

This year, the floating restaurant is decorated with works by the famous artist Tilisa Zhorik. Zhorik was the first Mexican-American woman to exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and has had several exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.

“Mexico is one of the most exciting culinary destinations in the world with a rich and complex food culture and history,” said Craig Canaric, CEO of New York Cruise Lines. “After spending the past three years researching everything I can about agave spirits, including mezcal and tequila, I am delighted to draw attention to a beverage category that is as diverse but not as widely known as wine. The cocktail menu includes agave-based spirits such as mezcal, tequila, sotol and racilla. Other cocktails include Drunken Rabbit (an Oaxacan rum with passionfruit), Bandera (three portions, each served in a separate glass - one with tequila, one with lime juice, and one with a spicy tomato juice called sangrita, a classic margarita served on stones or frozen). Most of them can be served in large format for couples or groups.

On the menu, diners will find tacos, Tony's Campechano (beef, pork, and fried shallots) or Fiesta Platter (a giant bowl filled with snacks). Dishes - whole Mexican fried chicken, onion rings, jalapeno poppers and corn chips with various sauces. Of course, there are also classics like guacamole with fresh corn chips, chicken quesadillas and queso fundido. There is a new proposal for vegetarians - vegetarian nachos, which is a mountain of tortilla chips, melted cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole, made from a plant-based meat alternative.

La Barca Cantina, located at Pier 81 at 41st Street and 12th Avenue, is now open five days a week, Wednesday through Sunday.
