NYC Health + Hospitals, District Council No. 9 Local Union 1969, Civil Service Employees, International Union of Painters & Allied Trades (DC 9) announced the launch of their new program to prepare New Yorkers for a career as a house painter.

During the four years of training, DC 9 will provide classroom training and NYC Health + Hospitals will provide on-the-job training. The program is expected to generate a pool of candidates with the skills and experience needed to pass the civil service exam and qualify for a job in a painters' union.

The four-year Apprentice Painter program requires a total of 6 hours of training, including 576 hours of on-the-job training and 6 hours of classroom instruction. Graduates will be required to pass a civil service exam for promotion to painter and be assigned to work as a union painter.

Under New York Mayor Eric Adams' plan to rebuild the city's economy, the Apprentice Painter program will help New Yorkers find jobs and gain in-demand skills. Painters earn an average of $82 a year.

Briana Fantauzzi, an aspiring house painter at NYC Health + Hospitals, said she tried many jobs before finding one she liked.

“Before choosing my career, I worked on everything and did a little bit of everything,” Fantauzzi said. “From the food industry to working with children, office work, maintenance, I did everything. I decided I wanted to take a leap of faith and try my hand at a whole new career, which is why I applied to the Painters Union.”

“They called me and said that my application was accepted and that they have a job offer for me. NYC Health + Hospitals was looking for union workers for the next 4 years and I couldn't turn down the offer. Now I'm here and I can't imagine myself anywhere else," she added.

Participants in the Apprentice Painter program will gain several skills, including:

• use and maintenance of hand and power tools;
• alarm, rigging and lifting;
• fight against lead and asbestos;
• stairs, scaffolding and forklift safety;
• first aid;
• proper use of personal protective equipment;
• trading skills;
• reading drawings;
• determining the appropriate material for various coatings and surfaces;
• types and properties of materials, including paints, stains, varnishes, shellac, polyurethanes and clear coats;
• safe storage, disposal and processing of commercial chemicals;
• mixing paints;
• suitable colors;
• surface preparation;
• wood finishing;
• applying wallpaper;
• preparation of the place for painting (removal of old paint, dismantling of plumbing, application of a mold remover);
• preparation of the place for exterior painting (rust removal, washing and sandblasting, burning out old paint);
• spray painting;
• calculation of cost and materials;
• an overview of basic arithmetic;
• communication skills;
• bookkeeping, accounting, record keeping.

From August 29, District Council No. 9 is accepting applications for steel structure painter and bridge painter training at its training center in Long Island City (45-15 36th).
